Shapotou plays as two parks strung by a shuttle — morning water thrills in the Yellow River zone, afternoon camels and dune-play in the Tengger. Start early to beat both queues and the midday glare; from Nov 1 the desert-side rides pause for winter, which bends the classic plan toward the river.
Suggested Itinerary
- One day — River to Dunes
Water Gate in → speedboat across the river → desert escalator up → 'Fly Across the Yellow River' zipline → cable car up and sled down the big slope → Wang Wei Terrace → shuttle to the desert zone → camel ride → dune buggy → free sand-play area → shuttle back → sheepskin raft downstream to the exit. - Two days — Play & Stars
Day 1 the river zone at leisure plus Zhongwei's old streets in the evening; Day 2 the desert zone with an overnight star camp — dune sunset, a thick band of stars, sunrise from the crest. - Half day — River Zone Essence
The sand slope and a sled run, the zipline or glass bridge, the Wang Wei Terrace panorama, and a sheepskin-raft drift to finish.
What to See
Wang Wei Viewing Terrace
The postcard panorama — the Yellow River's great bend, dunes and oasis in one frame, at its best as the sun drops low.
The Singing Sand Slope
The 100-metre Shapo that gives the park its name; slide it on a warm dry day to hear the dune hum.
Straw Grids & the Railway
Wheat-straw checkerboards pinning the dunes beside the Baotou–Lanzhou line, with sand-control exhibits telling the decades-long story.
Desert Escalator & Cable Car
A 160-metre tunnel escalator up the dune face and the 'White Dragon' gondolas gliding back over the sand — both paused with the desert rides from Nov 1 until further notice.
Glass Bridge & the Desert Swing
The 3D glass bridge over river-and-dune scenery, and the 55-metre 'Desert Flying' swing with the whole Tengger spread below.
Star Camp & Dune Sunrise
Sunset photography, tent-side stargazing and first light from the crest — the slow, cinematic Shapotou.

Tips from Real Travelers
Food & Drink
Yellow River Carp
The river's own fish, served at farmhouses along the bank — travelers rank it the taste of Shapotou.
Hand-Grabbed Lamb
Ningxia's signature tender boiled lamb eaten by hand — best at Zhongwei's night market after a dune day.
Sand Chives
A desert allium gathered at the dune edge, classically stir-fried with eggs — a genuine taste of the frontier.
Selenium-Sand Melon (硒砂瓜)
Zhongwei's own watermelon, grown in gravel-mulch fields that bank the day's heat for sugary fruit — the desert-country dessert between legs.
