Heavenly Lake of Tianshan

Heavenly Lake of Tianshan

昌吉回族自治州天山天池风景名胜区·Changji, Xinjiang·Northwest China

An alpine jade lake at 1,907 meters beneath the triple summit of Bogda Peak - spruce forests, snow lines and the Queen Mother of the West's mythical pond, 90 minutes from Urumqi in the UNESCO-listed Tianshan.

Heaven Lake (Tianchi) sits in a glacier-carved bowl halfway up the northern slope of the Bogda massif, in the Tianshan range inscribed by UNESCO as World Natural Heritage in 2013. The lake's 4.9 square kilometers of deep jade water reflect the 5,445-meter Bogda Peak and its hanging glaciers; around its shores four vertical vegetation zones stack from steppe to snow line, a complete mountain ecosystem compressed into one view.

Chinese myth names this the pond of Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West - the goddess who held court here and, in the穆天子传, entertained King Mu of Zhou on the lake's banks. Her temple still occupies the eastern shore's hillside, and the lone spruce standing in the shallows is celebrated as her 'sea-calming needle'.

The modern visit runs: shuttle bus up the 50-minute gorge road through Stone Gate, a 15-minute walk to the north shore, then choices - the 3-4 hour lakeside boardwalk loop, a boat cruise under the peak, or the climbs to the East and West small pools with their waterfall cascades. Most of Urumqi does this as a day trip; the classic view is the first one, lake-spruce-snowline in a single frame.

Highlights

1

The Bogda reflection

From the north shore platforms: triple snow summits and glaciers doubled in green water - the photograph that defines the Tianshan.

2

Lakeside boardwalk loop

The 3-4 hour circuit under spruce cliffs, past the King Mu-Eight Immortals viewing stones and quieter east-shore reaches.

3

The Queen Mother's Temple

The lakeside goddess temple on the east shore hillside - incense, prayer flags and the best back-lake angle.

4

East & West small pools

The walking trails above the lake: the East pool's waterfall cascade (about 50 minutes) and the longer West-pool gorge route (2-3 hours).

5

Boat cruise

A 25-minute spin on the deep water with the full amphitheater of peak and forest rotating past.

6

Stone Gate gorge road

The shuttle's climb through the narrow rock gateway and switchbacks - the mountain's overture, so sit left.
