Jingpo Lake

Jingpo Lake

牡丹江市镜泊湖景区·Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang·Northeast China

Jingpo Lake reads best as a slow loop, not a checklist: match the falls to the dive schedule, take the lake's measure from a boat deck, and bank a second day for the volcanoes — the 48-hour ticket is built exactly for that. These notes blend official guidance with recent travelers' experience.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. One day — Falls, Dive & Cruise
Bus straight to Diaoshuilou for the 10:00 cliff dive → Heilong Pool boardwalk and stele garden → lake-fish lunch → afternoon half-lake cruise from Shanzhuang Pier → sunset from the lakeshore boardwalk.
  2. Two days — Lake, Craters & Bohai
Day 1 as above; Day 2 drive or shuttle ~50 km to the Crater Underground Forest — craters No. 1 and No. 3, the lava-tube caves — or the free Tang-era Bohai capital ruins at Bohai Town, all within the ticket's 48-hour window.
  3. Winter — Ice Curtain & Net-Pulling
The frozen 300-m falls curtain and rime-fringed open pool → Di Huanran's 14:00 ice-cliff dive → ice and snow activities on the lake → daily net-pulling at the Winter Fishing Festival, mid-January to late February.

What to See

1

Diaoshuilou Waterfall & Stele Garden

The lava-cave-collapse waterfall, with Deng Xiaoping's 1983 brushwork '镜泊胜景' ('Jingpo Scenic Wonder') and steles by Qing emperors Kangxi and Qianlong beside the roar.

2

Heilong Pool Boardwalk

The spray-side ring around the ~60 m plunge basin that never freezes — mist-borne rainbows on sunny mornings, and the stage for winter's open-water feats.

3

The Eight Lake Sights

Maogong Hill — a ridge named for its sleeping-profile likeness, not any inscription — plus the Solitary Hills, White Cliff, City-Wall Cliff, Pearl Gate and Daoist Hill, read best from the cruise bow.

4

Crater Underground Forest

Korean pine and broadleaf primeval forest growing inside craters up to 500 m across and 132 m deep; several hundred steps link the rims to the forest floor through high negative-ion 'oxygen-bar' air.

5

Lava-Tube Caves

China's largest lava tunnel system, with tubes running up to 10 km: the Ancient Ice Cave keeps its ice in midsummer, and Weihu 'Tiger Hall' recalls the bandit-hunting novel Tracks in the Snowy Forest.

6

Bohai Kingdom Capital

26 km off, the Shangjing Longquanfu ruins of a Tang-era state laid out like Chang'an — Xinglong Temple's 6-m basalt stone lantern is the relic to see; entry free, site museum closed Mondays.

Food & Drink

Full Fish Banquet (全鱼宴)

The lake's cold, slow-grown fish — the folk tally runs 'Three Huas, Five Luos and 72 assorted' — in dozens of preparations, rising to 100-plus dishes at Jingpo Lake Hotel.

Iron-Pot Stewed Bighead (铁锅炖胖头鱼)

The geographical-indication bighead carp simmered in a black iron pot over fire — the warming Northeast classic.

Dry-Fried Red-Tail Fish (干炸红尾鱼)

Crisp-fried red-tail, another GI-protected lake species — sweet, firm cold-water flesh; the lake's crucian carp was once a Qing imperial tribute.

Jingpo Carp Threads & Xiangshui Rice (镜泊鲤鱼丝)

Fine-shredded lake carp in the local classic, with rice from the area's stone-slab paddy fields alongside.
