Baiyun Mountain (Guangzhou)

Baiyun Mountain (Guangzhou)

广州市白云山景区·Guangzhou, Guangdong·South China

Baiyun rewards picking the right gate for your legs: the South Gate for cable car, aviary and summit essentials, the West Gate for quiet forests and the reservoir. These notes blend official guidance with travelers' on-the-ground experience.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Half day — Sunset & City Lights
South Gate in mid-afternoon → cable car (or A-line buggy) to Hilltop Plaza → 15–20-minute walk to Moxing Ridge for sunset → back at Baiyun Evening Gaze as Canton Tower and Zhujiang New Town light up → descend by buggy or on foot (the cable car closes 18:00).
  2. One day — South-to-West Traverse (~12 km)
South Gate → Nengren Temple and Jiulong Spring → Guangzhou Stele Forest → Hilltop Plaza → Moxing Ridge → northwest down through Peach Blossom Ravine to Huangpo Cave Reservoir → out by the West Gate, through the Mingzhu Lou sector's bamboo, plum valley and pine waves.
  3. Easy day — Gardens, Birds & the Lake
Yuntai Garden's terraces in the morning → cable car up to Hilltop Plaza → Mingchun Valley aviary and lawn time → buggy or gondola down → a waterside stroll at Luhu Lake to finish.

What to See

1

Moxing Ridge

The 382-m summit — elevation marker, 'Lock of Love' padlock terrace and the 'Splendid Southern Sky' archway above a panorama from Canton Tower to the Pearl River; reached on foot from Hilltop Plaza or by the D-line buggy (¥5).

2

Baiyun Evening Gaze & Hilltop Plaza

The cable car's upper station and buggy hub — lawns, kiosks and a viewpoint promenade beside the Qing-era 'First Peak of the South' archway, the mountain's only surviving ancient structure.

3

Yuntai Garden

Butchart-inspired terraces on Santailing — flying-waterfall cascade, glass conservatory, rose and rock gardens, a Dutch windmill and sister-city gifts from Los Angeles, Auckland and beyond (¥10).

4

Mingchun Valley

China's largest natural-style netted aviary, 56,000 m² of ravine where peacocks and red-crowned cranes roam; bird shows reported daily at 10:00 and 15:00 (¥10).

5

Nengren Temple & Jiulong Spring

An 1824 Chan temple folded into a bowl of hills — freshly restored and reopened in 2026 — near the Nine Dragon Spring's Qing granite railings and the calligraphy steles of the Guangzhou Stele Forest (¥5).

6

Huangpo Cave Reservoir & Peach Blossom Ravine

The northwest's mirror-still water — 'Guangzhou's Little Jiuzhaigou' — ringed by bald cypress that turns red-orange in Nov–Dec, near ~4,000 peach trees, Plum Valley and the Neolithic Huangpo Cave site.

Tips from Real Travelers

Food & Drink

Baiyun Pig Trotters (白云猪手)

Cold, sweet-vinegar-crisp trotters — the classic dish said to have been born on this mountain; gate-area restaurants do the best versions.

Shahe Rice Noodles (沙河粉)

The broad, silky rice noodle named for nearby Shahe town — the Shahe Fen Village restaurant sits by the South Gate.

Mountain-Water Tofu Pudding (山水豆腐花)

Silken tofu flower with syrup from trailside stalls and Hilltop Plaza kiosks — the classic mid-climb refuel.

Cantonese Morning Tea

Descend into the city that invented yum cha — shrimp dumplings, rice rolls and barbecue-pork buns turn any gate into a food crawl.
