China's most famous lake — a UNESCO-listed garden of water where two poets' causeways, three islets, two pagodas and ten named scenes have set the standard for landscape beauty for a thousand years, all free and open around the clock.
West Lake is less a lake than a thousand-year collaboration between nature and design: Bai Juyi and Su Shi — poet-officials both — built its two great causeways in the Tang and Song dynasties; monks raised Leifeng and Baochu pagodas on its hills; and generations of gardeners tuned the views until the lake itself became a textbook of Chinese aesthetics. UNESCO inscribed it in 2011 as 'an outstanding model of cultural landscape'.
The numbers behind the postcard: one hill, two pagodas, three islets, three causeways, five lake sections, ten classic scenes — from 'Spring Dawn at Su Causeway' to 'Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard' and the 'Three Pools Mirroring the Moon' printed on the one-yuan banknote. Every scene is a season, a time of day and a weather; locals rank them: sunny West Lake yields to rainy, rainy to night, night to snow.
The lake costs nothing and closes never: walk it, cycle it, boat it, or ride the lakeshore e-carts. It anchors a heritage city — Lingyin Temple, Longjing tea villages and the Qiantang riverbank all sit within a short radius.
Highlights
Broken Bridge
The White Snake legend's meeting place — and the 'Lingering Snow' scene when winter dusts it white.
Su Causeway
Six stone bridges under willow and peach — the 3-km spine of the lake, built by poet Su Shi.
Three Pools Mirroring the Moon
The islet garden and its three stone pagodas — the view engraved on the one-yuan note, reachable by boat.
Leifeng Pagoda
The rebuilt tower over the lake's south shore — sunset from its terrace is the classic panorama.
Sunset Glow at Leifeng & Gem Hill
Two aerial options: the pagoda looking north, or the ten-minute climb of Gem Hill looking south.
Evening Lake & Musical Fountains
After dark the lake turns to lamplight and music — the nightly fountain show at the east shore is the free finale.
