Grape Valley (Turpan)

Grape Valley (Turpan)

吐鲁番市葡萄沟风景区·TuLuFan, Xinjiang·Northwest China

Grape Valley reads best at strolling pace: follow the shade, follow the sugar, and let the courtyards find you. These notes blend official guidance with recent travelers' experience.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Half day — Shade & Sugar
Trellis corridors → raisin-drying houses → a courtyard fruit-and-dance break → Wang Luobin Music Art Museum → dried-fruit market at the exit.
  2. One day — Classic Turpan Loop
Jiaohe Ancient City at opening, a Karez well at midday cool, Grape Valley's corridors with a courtyard lunch, then Flaming Mountain in the low, red-gold sun.
  3. Two days — Oasis Slow
Day 1 the classic loop; Day 2 the upper valley and Frog Spring in the cool morning, Afanti and Dawaazi folk areas, a naan-making stop, and a long dusk stroll after the heat breaks.

What to See

1

The Trellis Corridors

Kilometres of pergola tunnels over a snowmelt creek — the signature walk, with bunches overhead in the harvest weeks.

2

Raisin-Drying Houses (晾房)

Beehive-lattice mud-brick rooms where mountain air cures grapes into Turpan's green-gold raisins.

3

Wang Luobin Music Art Museum

The folk-song master's manuscripts and memory — 'In That Distant Place' was born of this valley.

4

Uyghur Hospitality Courtyards

Adobe homes under arbors — fruit platters, fresh naan and dance beneath the vines.

5

Afanti & Dawaazi Folk Areas

The wit of Afanti's old home and the Dawaazi folk park's high-wire acrobatics shows in season.

6

Frog Spring (青蛙泉)

A cool spring and the greener upper valley — where the canyon feels deepest.

Tips from Real Travelers

Food & Drink

Turpan Raisins & Dried Fruits

Air-dried in the valley's lattice houses — seedless whites, mulberries, apricots and dates, best bought at the exit market after a tasting.

Roast Lamb

Turpan's celebration roast — smoky, cumin-crusted and carved straight from the frame.

Uyghur Pilaf (手抓饭)

Golden rice with carrot and lamb — the hearty everyday feast of the valley.

Naan & Baked Buns

Fresh from the tandoor — plain naan and juicy lamb-filled baked buns (烤包子), with mulberry or grape juice alongside.
