Temple of Heaven Park

Temple of Heaven Park

天坛公园·Beijing·North China

Walk the ritual axis from south to north, as the emperor did, and the complex unfolds in the right order — altar, vault, bridge, hall. These routes blend the official circuit with morning-timing advice from Mafengwo travelers.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. 2 hours — The Ritual Axis
South Gate → Round Altar → Echo Wall → Danbi Bridge → Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests → exit via the East or North Gate.
  2. Half day — Altars & Park
The axis above plus the Fasting Palace's vermilion walls and a slow loop through the cypress groves where locals practise morning exercise.
  3. Dawn visit — Local Life
Enter at 6:30 with the regulars: tai chi, diabolo spinning and courtyard opera beneath the trees, then the halls as they open at 8:00.

What to See

1

Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (Qinian Dian)

Twenty-eight pillars — four 'season' columns, twelve 'months' and twelve 'hours' — hold up the cone's blue-tiled heavens.

2

Round Altar (Yuanqiu)

Nine concentric rings of marble around the cosmic centre stone; stand there and speak.

3

Echo Wall (Huiyin Bi)

The 65-metre circle of polished brick around the Imperial Vault carries whispers from end to end.

4

Fasting Palace (Zhai Gong)

The emperor's retreat before the rites — a quiet palace-within-a-park, largely tour-free.

5

Nine-Dragon Juniper

A 500-year-old cypress twisted like climbing dragons, beside the ritual axis.

6

Violet Iris Season

Each April the groves floor blue-violet with Chinese iris — a citywide spring signal.

Tips from Real Travelers

Food & Drink

Old Beijing Breakfasts

Doufunao (tofu pudding), fried rings and soy milk at shops near the north gate.

Qianmen Classics

Roast duck institutions and century-old snack shops a short walk northwest.

Hongqiao Pearl Market

Street food and market browsing beside the east gate — fun for an hour.

Douzhi & Chaogan Classics

Old Ciqikou Douzhi, opposite the north gate, pours the famously sour fermented mung-bean milk with crisp jiaoquan rings; Tianxingju by Qianmen answers with chaogan — glossy stewed liver 'drunk' from the bowl with pork buns.
