Confucius Sites of Qufu

济宁市明故城三孔旅游区·Qufu, Shandong·East China

Three sites, one axis, one of history's longest family stories — these notes blend official guidance with Mafengwo travelers' visits.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. The Classic Day
8:00 bell ceremony at the temple gate → temple's nine courtyards (2–11, catch the 11:00 Dacheng ritual) → lunch on Gutou street → mansion → Spirit Way walk or cart to the cemetery → Confucius' tomb by closing.
  2. Two Relaxed Days
Day 1: temple + mansion at reading pace with a guide; Day 2: cemetery morning plus the Ming old city walls and Yan Temple.
  3. Half-Day Essentials
Temple's central axis + Apricot Altar + Dacheng Hall, then the mansion's front offices — the 3-hour version.

What to See

1

Dacheng Hall's Columns

Ten polished-stone columns wrapped in deep-cut dragons — the hall Beijing's palaces were said to envy.

2

Apricot Altar Pavilion

The site of the teaching — a modest pavilion that outranks palaces in meaning.

3

The Mansion's Front Court & Rear House

Yamen offices where the family administered its estates, then the private rooms of China's oldest aristocracy.

4

Kong Lin's Tomb of the Sage

The simple grave among 100,000 family tombs and 100,000 trees — walk in, ride back.

5

Stele Pavilions of the Emperors

Every dynasty's imperial inscriptions, sheltered pavilion by pavilion along the axis.

6

The Ming Old City Wall

The 16th-century wall rebuilt around the temple — walkable, with the whole axis in view.

Tips from Real Travelers

Food & Drink

Confucius Family Banquet Dishes

The Kong kitchens' banquet tradition — refined Shandong courses from honeyed ginkgo to slow-steamed 'immortal duck'; order a tasting set at the temple-side Queli Hotel (阙里宾舍) or the Confucian Garden Hotel.

Xiang Rice & Shandong Pancakes

Local fragrant rice and scallion-rolled pancakes — the workday counterpoint to the banquet.

Gutou Street Snacks

The lane between temple and mansion — tofu, smoked pork and everything on a stick.

Smoked Tofu (熏豆腐)

Qufu's own snack — tofu smoked over fruitwood, then stewed in the five-spice chilli pot; the firewood-fired stalls by the old East Gate are the classic stop, Wumaci Street the handy one.
