Purple Mountain & Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum

南京市钟山风景名胜区-中山陵园风景区·Nanjing, Jiangsu·East China

The mountain rewards a route, not a wander — the sights chain naturally south to north. These notes blend official guidance with Mafengwo travelers' experience.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Full day — The Classic Chain
Ming Xiaoling at opening → Sacred Way → Plum Blossom Hill → Meiling Palace → shuttle to Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum → Music Stage → Linggu Temple to finish.
  2. Half day — Ming Core
Ming Xiaoling + Sacred Way in the morning light, then the shuttle up to the mausoleum steps before the crowds thicken.
  3. Seasonal — Blossom or Gold
February: Plum Blossom Hill first, then Meiling Palace; November: Sacred Way gingkos first, mausoleum after.

What to See

1

The 392 Steps

Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum stairway — from the top, the plain and the pines; from the bottom, the steps erase the platforms. Engineering as metaphor.

2

Stone Elephant Road

Six species of carved guardians — camels, elephants, unicorns — marching between 600-year-old trees.

3

Meiling Palace Interiors

Soong Mei-ling's paintings, dressing room and bulletproof Cadillac garage — Republic-era intimacy at its best.

4

Beamless Hall

Linggu Temple's Ming brick vault built without a single beam — cool, echoing and austere.

5

Linggu Pagoda

Nine storeys of forest panorama — the quiet high point, literally, of the east side.

6

Purple Mountain Observatory

China's first modern observatory, 1.3 km on — bronze instruments and mountain views.

Linggu Temple Vegetarian

The temple's vegetarian noodles — simple, famous and fortress-cool in summer.

Scenic-Zone Cafés

Rest stops near the mausoleum lot and Meiling Palace for coffee and lotus snacks.

Duck-Blood Vermicelli Soup

Nanjing's signature bowl — duck broth with blood curd, gizzards and slippery vermicelli, the classic refuel after the 392 steps.

Back to Town

Nanjing's salted duck is a metro ride away in central Nanjing — the earned feast after the circuit.
