The green mountain rising behind Nanjing — one ridge carrying a Six-Dynasties Buddhist temple, a Ming emperor's tomb, modern China's founding mausoleum and a First Lady's villa, stitched together by plane-tree avenues and the golden Sacred Way.
Locals call it Zijinshan, the Purple-Gold Mountain, and treat it as their city's back garden: a forested ridge that gathers 'mountain, water, city and forest in one view' twenty minutes from downtown. For visitors it is China's history syllabus walked end-to-end — the Six Dynasties left Linggu Temple, the Ming dynasty left the Xiaoling mausoleum and its Sacred Way of stone animals, the Republic left Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum climbing 392 steps, and the 1930s left Meiling Palace, the plane-tree villa that from the air forms a necklace with a green jewel at its centre.
The scenic zone is big enough for a full day and honest about it: a shuttle 'little train' and rental carts loop the major sights, and the four-ticket combo (Ming Xiaoling + Meiling Palace + Music Stage + Linggu Temple) is the standard buy. The mountain park itself is free and open all day — only the inner monuments charge.
Seasons write the calendar: February fills Plum Blossom Hill with flowering trees, November turns the Sacred Way's gingkos into a gold tunnel, and late spring sends sweet osmanthus through the Linggu woods. Each is worth planning around.
