Lijiang's sacred snow dragon — ride the ropeway to 4,506 m glaciers, then descend to improbable Tiffany-blue lakes. Yunnan's most thrilling day trip.
Yulong (Jade Dragon) Snow Mountain is the reason Lijiang has a skyline: thirteen summits strung along a north–south spine like the coils of a dragon made of ice — 'Yulong' means exactly that. The Naxi people hold the massif sacred as the home of their guardian god, and its main peak Shanzidou (扇子陡) rises 5,596 m, the storied crown of a range that has reigned over northwest Yunnan since long before the Old Town had walls. A national 5A scenic area since 2007, it is the image on every postcard of the region — and the one sight first-time visitors tend to photograph in silence.
The superlatives are geographic fact, not brochure poetry: Yulong is the lowest-latitude modern glacier area in Eurasia — the southernmost glacier-fed peak cluster in the Northern Hemisphere — where monsoon snow and near-tropical light meet on the same faces. Glaciers still carve its upper walls; their meltwater feeds Blue Moon Valley's improbable travertine lakes below; and because the whole range rears straight off the 2,400-m plateau around Lijiang, the crest reads even grander than its number. On a clear dawn the first sun turns the summit plates gold — the famed 'sunrise gold' (日照金山) that locals set their alarms by.
One mountain, a full day of experiences strung along its skirts. Ganhaizi, the open meadow at the foot, is the free viewing deck for that dawn light; the big ropeway lifts you to Glacier Park's 4,506-m station, where a boardwalk climbs to the 4,680-m stone marker beside living ice; two quieter ropeways open Spruce Meadow and Yak Meadow, high pastures framed by ancient forest; and Blue Moon Valley gathers the whole mountain's blue into one lakeside stroll. Zhang Yimou's open-air Impression Lijiang plays the amphitheater at 3,100 m. All of it sits about 30 km — under an hour — from Lijiang Old Town.
Highlights
Glacier Park (冰川公园)
The headline act: the big ropeway to a 4,506-m platform, then a boardwalk climb to the 4,680-m stone marker beside real glaciers — the highest walk most visitors will ever take.
Blue Moon Valley (蓝月谷)
Tiffany-blue travertine lakes and white cascades pooled directly below the peak — included with entrance, and glorious when the midday sun lights the water.
Spruce Meadow (云杉坪)
A small ropeway into an alpine meadow ringed by prime spruce forest, facing the snow walls — easy, romantic, and steeped in the Naxi legend of the 'Third Kingdom'.
Yak Meadow (牦牛坪)
The third ropeway and the quietest corner: high pasture, grazing yaks, and the widest panorama of all thirteen peaks.
Ganhaizi & Sunrise Gold (甘海子)
The open meadow at the mountain's foot — the free viewing deck where dawn gilds Shanzidou, the moment the whole scenic area is arranged around.
Impression Lijiang (印象丽江)
Zhang Yimou's team stages an open-air show with hundreds of local performers at 3,100 m in the Ganhaizi amphitheater — the peak itself is the set.
