Leshan Giant Buddha

Leshan Giant Buddha

乐山市乐山大佛景区·Leshan, Sichuan·Southwest China

The classic route: enter the north gate, walk Lingyun Temple and the Buddha's head terrace, descend the Nine Bends Walkway to his feet, climb back via the riverside Lingyun Walkway, then - optionally - cross to Wuyou Mountain via the Han-tomb trail. Finish with the boat cruise for the frontal view you can only imagine from below.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Enter via north gate
Arrive at opening to beat the walkway queue; head first for the Buddha's head terrace.
  2. Nine Bends descent
Switchback down past shoulder, ear and foot - the 30 minutes everyone remembers.
  3. Lingyun Temple & terraces
Incense halls above the colossus, then the ridge trail toward the sleeping-Buddha viewpoint.
  4. River cruise
Down to the dock for the 15-minute mid-river frontal view.
  5. Wuyou Mountain (optional)
The quieter forested hill with Wuyou Temple and the Mahao cliff tombs - an hour's add-on.

What to See

1

Base of the Buddha

Looking up 60 meters of stone robe from between his feet - the scale shot.

Level with the 14-meter head, curl-studs of hair visible at arm's length.

3

Mid-river frontal view

The cruise turn - the only complete head-to-plinth framing.

4

Sleeping Buddha ridge

From the far bank or cruise, the mountain itself lies as a reclining figure.

5

Mahao cliff tombs

Han-dynasty burial chambers carved in the cliff between the two mountains.
