A valley of 3,400 travertine pools stacked like a golden dragon's scales beneath 5,500-meter snow peaks - China's finest highland wetland, nicknamed the 'Fairyland Pools', 40 minutes from Jiuzhaigou's lakes.
Huanglong ('Yellow Dragon') curls for 3.6 kilometers through a mountain valley in Songpan county, its floor layered by millennia of calcite deposition into terraces of pools that glow gold, jade and turquoise. Seen from the opposite ridge, the whole formation resembles a dragon descending the mountain - hence the name - with Five-Color Pond, the 3,576-meter-high finale, as its eye.
The reserve is China's best-preserved alpine wetland, celebrated for 'Four Wonders': the colored pool terraces, snow peaks over 5,000 meters, deep gorges and primeval forest. UNESCO inscribed it as World Natural Heritage in 1992 - paired in every itinerary with nearby Jiuzhaigou, yet utterly different in character: where Jiuzhaigou is glass lakes and waterfalls, Huanglong is living stone, warm calcite terraces rippling with rivulets.
A boardwalk climbs the length of the dragon - Welcome Pools at the foot, Gold Sand Shoal's golden slope, the Bathing Cave and the Competing-Colors cascade, ending at Five-Color Pond and the hillside Huanglong Temple. The reverse cable-car-and-walk-down strategy has spared most knees the 400-meter climb; summer and autumn's high water is when the pools run fullest and brightest.
Highlights
Five-Color Pond (Wucaichi)
The valley's summit pool cluster at 3,576 m - dozens of small terraces shifting through five distinct colors beneath the temple.
The Pool Terraces (Zhengyanchi)
The main escarpment: hundreds of stepped calcite basins spilling into each other like a frozen golden waterfall.
Gold Sand Shoal (Jinsha Pudi)
A 1,300-meter slope of golden calcite ripple under a skin of running water - the dragon's glowing spine.
Huanglong Temple
A Ming-era temple at 3,568 m backing onto the summit pools - the cultural heart and highest point of the walk.
Cable-car ridge walk
The ascent cable drops you in spruce forest for a flat 20-minute ridge stroll to the summit pools - the smart route.
Snow-peak viewpoints
Xuebaoding's 5,588-m dome floats above the valley from the boardwalk's upper bends.
