Fenghuang Ancient Town

湘西土家族苗族自治州凤凰古城旅游区·Xiangxi, Hunan·Central China

Shen Congwen's riverside town of Tujia and Miao stilt houses — 400-year-old lanes above the Tuo River, hoopoes of lanterns at dusk, and the misty morning scene of women washing clothes on the stone steps below the towers.

Fenghuang (Phoenix) Ancient Town in Xiangxi, Hunan, is China's most romantic small walled town: a loop of Ming-Qing lanes set on a hill between a green river and the mountains, its wooden stilt houses (diaojiaolou) overhanging the Tuo on both banks. The novelist Shen Congwen — born in a courtyard here — made it the emotional geography of 'Border Town', and the town has drawn pilgrims ever since.

The town is free to wander: crossing Tiaoyan — the line of stone jumping stones — under the Rainbow Bridge, the riverside walk past the hanging houses, and the morning mist scene of locals washing clothes at the water steps are all open streets. A combo ticket covers the museums-and-mansions circuit (Shen Congwen's home, the Miao chief's palace, the East Gate tower and more); the river boat trip runs separately.

The magic hours are the edges: dawn mist and laundry rhythms before the day crowd, then the full lantern-lit river after dark — Fenghuang's night reflection is the postcard. Most visit on a Zhangjiajie–Xiangxi circuit, one night being the honest minimum.
