Danxia Mountain

韶关市丹霞山景区·Shaoguan, Guangdong·South China

The mountain that named a landform — the type site of 'danxia' red-bed cliffs worldwide, where 600-million-year-old sandstone towers glow crimson over the Jinjiang River, and sunrise from Elder Peak lights a maze of monoliths, temples and cliff plank-walks.

Danxia Mountain at Shaoguan, Guangdong, is the geology textbook made flesh: the world's 'danxia' landform — red sandstone scarps, pillars and natural bridges — is named after this very mountain, and as the flagship of the UNESCO 'China Danxia' inscription (2010) it remains the reference example of the form. Six hundred million years of deposition and uplift built its red towers; the Jinjiang River belts them in green.

The park splits into manageable arenas: the Elder Peak (Zhanglaofeng) area — cable car, Biechuan Temple and the sunrise terraces over the whole red maze; the Yangyuan Stone area with its famous 28-metre monolith, the Ninety-Nine Ladder stair and the Ximeizhai ruins; the Jinjiang Gallery's river bends seen by boat; and Bazhai, the wild high country for walkers.

Poets and monks have worked the cliffs for a millennium — 800-plus grotto-temple sites and whole libraries of cliff inscription — and the mountain still holds working temples among the towers. One long day covers the two main arenas; add the river cruise or a second dawn for the full palette.
