A turquoise crater lake cradled at 2,189 metres on the China–North Korea border — the world's highest volcanic lake, ringed by sixteen peaks and wrapped in waterfall, forest and hot-spring country.
Changbai — 'Ever-White Mountain' — is a sleeping giant straddling the border of Jilin and North Korea, its summit crater brimming with Heaven Lake (Tianchi), a 9.8-square-kilometre lake 300 metres deep that freezes solid from December to June. Formed by a colossal eruption around 946 AD, the caldera lake holds the record as the world's highest volcanic lake, and its outflow tumbles down the volcano's northern flank as the 68-metre Changbai Waterfall before steaming through hot-spring terraces.
Below the lake, the mountain stacks five vertical worlds — from Korean-pine forest through birch to wind-stunted dwarf maple and alpine tundra — making the jeep-road ascent a compressed journey from temperate Asia to the Arctic. Manchu and Korean peoples both hold the mountain sacred as the birthplace of their ancestors' legends.
Visiting splits across three gates: the North Slope (waterfall, hot springs, the classic lake viewpoint), the West Slope (1,442 steps and the great Grand Canyon), and the quieter South Slope. The lake shows itself only to the lucky — clouds swirl in fast — which is precisely why seeing it feels like winning something.
Highlights
Heaven Lake (Tianchi)
The 2,189-metre crater lake in border-straddling turquoise — the sight the whole mountain is about.
Changbai Waterfall
The lake's overflow plunging 68 metres through a basalt notch, reached by boardwalk from the North Slope hot springs.
Volcanic Hot Springs
Steaming springs beside the waterfall trail — with eggs cooked in mineral water and feet soaked in comfort.
The West Slope Stairway
1,442 steps through flower meadows to the widest lake panorama — the purist's ascent.
Changbai Grand Canyon
A volcanic gorge of sculpted pinnacles on the West Slope road — the mountain's second marvel.
Alpine Flower Season
July brings the tundra ridges into bloom — dwarf azalea and gentian above the tree line.
