Museum of the Imperial Palace of Manchukuo

长春市 伪满皇宫博物院·Changchun, Jilin·Northeast China

This is a museum you walk as a narrative: Outer Court politics first, then Inner Court life, the garden, and finally the annex that explains what it all meant. Book a timed slot, start early, and let commentary carry the story.

What to See

1

Qinmin Building

The 'government center' of the puppet state: the 1934 enthronement hall, orchid-crest throne, reception rooms and the Kwantung Army liaison officer's office beside them.

2

Jixi Building

Fourteen years of private life behind a grey brick facade — Puyi's study and Buddhist altar, Empress Wanrong's bedroom and dressing room, Consort Tan Yuling's quarters.

3

Tongde Hall

The grandest building of all (1937–38): grand lobby, worship hall, China and Japan rooms, piano room, billiard room and cinema — and the concealed monitoring rooms behind the walls.

4

East Imperial Garden

Japanese-style 1938 landscaping with a Changbai-modeled rockery, koi pond, imperial swimming pool and air-raid shelter, on the site of the demolished Jianguo Shrine.

5

Northeast Occupation History Exhibition Hall

The free three-floor annex: 'Never Forget September 18' with 1,200+ photos and 1,000+ artifacts, and 'From Emperor to Citizen' tracing Puyi's later life.

6

Qing Treasures & the Imperial Garage

The 1936 Calligraphy & Painting Building once stored the Forbidden City treasures Puyi smuggled out — some 1,300 handscrolls; he fled with 57 crates in 1945. Huaiyuan Building displays his bulletproof limousine.

Northeast China's beloved crispy sweet-sour pork — thin slices fried to glass and glossed in vinegar-caramel.

Iron-Pot Stew

铁锅炖 — a whole chicken or fish simmered at the table with potatoes and cornbread stuck to the pot's rim.

Cold Noodles

Jilin's Korean-influenced cold buckwheat noodles in icy broth — the region's summer standard.
