What to See
Cave 20 — The Open-Air Buddha
Its forecourt collapsing ages ago left the 13.7-metre Buddha in the open air, smiling under the Datong sky.
Caves 5 & 6 — The Twins
A carved pagoda overhead, the Buddha's biography in bands of relief, colour still clinging after 1,500 years.
Cave 12 — The Musical Cave
Celestial orchestras with harps, flutes and drums — evidence for the history of Chinese instruments.
Cave 3 — The Unfinished Giant
The largest cave, its three serene figures carved generations after the Wei workmen left.
Tan Yao Square
Named for the monk who began the caves — the processional gateway to the cliff.
Yungang Museum
Fragments saved from weathering and theft, told with excellent lighting and clear English panels.

Tips from Real Travelers
Food & Drink
Datong Knife-Cut Noodles
Shanxi's signature daoxiao mian, shaved fresh into boiling broth — queue with visitors at Xijindao by Huayan Temple, or eat like a local at the Dongfang Daoxiao chain.
Yellow Millet Cake (Huang Gao)
Steamed rounds of golden millet flour — chewy, subtly sweet and best mopped through hearty northern stews, or fried crisp at old-town breakfast stalls.
Instant-Boiled Lamb
Shanxi's northern tables favour thin-sliced mutton hotpot with sesame dip.
Braised Rabbit Head
Datong's famously addictive spicy snack — rabbit heads red-braised for hours with a dozen spices; follow locals to Shuaifu Street, the old city's 'rabbit-head street'.
