Potala Palace

拉萨市 布达拉宫 景区·Lhasa, Tibet·Southwest China

Plan two encounters: one morning inside (booked, timed, clockwise one-way), and one outside at the magic hours - dawn light on the east face, dusk from Yaowang Hill, night from the square. Most travelers acclimatize in Lhasa two or three days before the climb; the palace itself is the steepest walk in the city.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Security & entry queue
Arrive an hour before your slot; lockers for bags, then the stone stair ramps up the hill face.
  2. White Palace ascent
Courtyards, the Dalai Lamas' audience halls and living quarters - the political wing, climbed at pilgrim pace.
  3. Red Palace core
The stupa chapels - the Fifth Dalai Lama's gold tomb, the meditation cave of Songtsen Gampo's era.
  4. Roof level & descent
Golden roofs and valley views, then the one-way stairs down into the northern lane.
  5. Yaowang Hill at dusk
The postcard platform as the light warms - return later for the lit square after dark.
