Mount Wutai

Mount Wutai

忻州市五台山风景名胜区·Xinzhou, Shanxi·North China

Wutai rewards slow circuit-walking: valley monasteries in the mornings, terraces and summits with a full day. These routes blend the classic pilgrim order with advice from Mafengwo travelers.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. 1 day — The Valley Kora
Xiantong → the White Stupa → Shuxiang's Manjusri → the 108 steps of Pusading → down to Wuye Temple's crowds and incense — the essential pilgrim loop on foot.
  2. 2 days — Valley & Summit
Day one as above; day two to Dailuo Summit (steps or chairlift), the southern cliff temples of Nanshan and Zhenhai, and a sunset over the valley.
  3. 3–4 days — The Five Terraces
The full dai-tai circuit by summit shuttle and foot across the five peaks — alpine meadows, wind and silence, the mountain as pilgrims have known it for a millennium.

What to See

1

Xiantong Temple

The mountain's oldest foundation — its beamless brick hall and bronze-cast pagoda are wonders of Ming engineering.

2

Tayuan White Stupa

Turn the prayer wheels clockwise around the mountain's great landmark, said to hold a relic of the Buddha.

3

Pusading

The yellow-roofed Tibetan summit monastery — dragons on glazed walls and the whole valley below.

4

Shuxiang Temple

The 1,500-year-old Manjusri statue that made the mountain — fragrance, prostrations and centuries of devotion.

5

Dailuo Summit

1,080 steps past pilgrims old and young to the temple of the Five Directions of Wisdom.

6

Foguang's Distant Cousin

Serious architecture pilgrims add the Tang-dynasty East Hall of Foguang Temple, an hour's drive beyond the park, among China's oldest timber buildings.

Monastery-run restaurants in Taihuai serve mushroom and tofu courses with mountain herbs.

Youmian Wowo

Shanxi oat-flour 'honeycomb' rolls — the region's beloved staple, dipped in mutton or tomato sauce.

Taihuai Street Food

Baked flatbreads, sweet rice cakes and warming soups along the town's lantern lanes.

Taimo Chicken Stew

Wild taimo mushrooms gathered on the high terrace meadows — prized in palace kitchens as early as Tang and Song times — slow-stewed with free-range chicken for the mountain's signature savoury dish.
