Golden Pebble Beach (Jinshitan)

大连市金石滩景区·DaLian, Liaoning·Northeast China

A 5A Yellow Sea peninsula 50 km east of Dalian: 6.5 km of sea-carved rock gardens up to 900 million years old, a 5-km golden beach, eight museums and a theme park.

Golden Pebble Beach (Jinshitan, 金石滩) is a national-level tourist resort spread across a peninsula on the Yellow Sea, about 50 km east of downtown Dalian at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula. It collects China's top designations at once — National 5A scenic area since 2011, national tourist resort, national marine park and national coastal geopark — across 125.5 square kilometres of land and sea and a 35 km coastline, all run by the state-owned Dalian Jinshitan Tourism Group.

Its fame was carved by the sea. Along a 6.5-km geological shore, Sinian- and Cambrian-period rocks laid down roughly 300–900 million years ago have been sculpted into formations geologists celebrate as a 'stone forest at sea' and a 'frozen animal world': the 40-metre Dinosaur Probing the Sea stack, Rose Garden's pink 700-million-year-old fossil algae, Nanxiu's blue-grained 'Roc Spreading Its Wings', Aotan's Turtle-Back Rock — hailed as 'the world's number-one marvelous rock' — and the golden karst maze of Jinshi Garden. Between the cliffs runs the 5-km Golden Coast, ranked among China's ten healthy bathing beaches.

Around this natural core has grown a complete seaside resort: the eight-venue Cultural Expo Square with its wax museum, science halls and dome cinema; Discover Kingdom, the Northeast's major theme park, with roller coasters, summer music festivals and night fireworks; the wedding-themed Sea Love Plaza that anchors the resort's 'romantic sanctuary' branding; and hot springs, golf and Blueberry Valley on the quieter west loop. Metro Line 3 ties the peninsula to Dalian in under an hour, so the classic day — geology at low tide, sand by afternoon, fireworks by night — sits within easy reach.

Highlights

1

Dinosaur Probing the Sea

The geopark's 40-metre sea stack — at high tide boats slip beneath its 'neck', at low tide you walk under it. The single most photographed rock on the coast.

2

Five Rock-Garden Clusters

Rose, Dinosaur, Nanxiu, Aotan and Jinshi: nearly 100 named sea-carved sights, from fossil-algae 'roses' to the layered strata of Turtle-Back Rock.

3

Golden Coast Beach

Five kilometres of soft sand, gentle gradient and clear water — one of China's ten 'healthy' bathing beaches, with sailing, jet skis and beach barbecues.

4

Discover Kingdom

Dalian's major theme park: 40-plus rides led by three roller coasters and two water rides, a summer electronic-music festival and night parades that end in castle fireworks.

5

Cultural Expo Square

Eight indoor venues — wax figures, EX Future robotics, plastinated specimens at Life Mystery, trick art and a dome cinema — the resort's rainy-day heart, 50 m from the station.

6

Sea Love Wedding Plaza & Sunsets

Heart installations and seafront promenades on the 'romantic sanctuary' coast, where the peninsula's rocks turn gold at the 'orange sea' sundown.
