Chengde Mountain Resort

承德市承德避暑山庄及周围寺庙景区·Chengde, Hebei·North China

Chengde is a walking garden with a mountain attached — plan zones, not kilometres. These routes blend the classic circuits with on-the-ground advice from Mafengwo travelers.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Half day — Palace & Lakes
Zhengzhong Gate → Palace halls → lake islands and Yanyu Tower → Wenjin Pavilion → Plain Zone grasslands, exiting by the west wall.
  2. Full day — The Complete Resort
Add the mountain-loop bus over the pine ridges with stops at the four viewing pavilions, then walk the lake at golden hour.
  3. Two days — Resort & Temples
Day one as above; day two for Putuo Zongcheng (Little Potala), Puning Temple's giant Buddha and the Sledgehammer Peak view.

What to See

1

Main Palace Halls

Danpoming Hall's nanmu-cedar interior — deliberately plainer than Beijing, matching the 'frugal frontier' pose.

2

Yanyu Tower (Misty Rain Tower)

The lake's emblem — a replica of Jiaxing's Nanhu tower on its islet, loveliest in morning mist.

3

Wenjin Pavilion

A lakeside library that sheltered one of the last complete copies of the Siku Quanshu encyclopedia.

4

Mongolian Yurt Grounds

Where Qianlong received Mongol nobles — today a picnic lawn beside the Plain Zone's old elk paddocks.

5

Ridge Viewing Pavilions

Four pavilions on the mountain loop overlook lake, wall, city and the temples beyond.

6

Putuo Zongcheng (Little Potala)

Red-and-white terraces rising like Lhasa itself — Chengde's most striking single sight.

Tips from Real Travelers

Food & Drink

Imperial-Style Banquets

Manchu court dishes in the streets north of Lizheng Gate — order the miniature 'hundred plates'.

Wild Mushroom Hotpot

The mountains' fungi star in Chengde's warming winter tables.

Qiaomayu Biscuits

The city's famous palm-shaped pastry — a portable classic since the Qing era.

Erxianju Wantuo (Bowl Cake)

A 200-year-old buckwheat bowl cake from the old Erxianju quarter, pan-fried and dressed with sesame paste, garlic and vinegar — still sold on the old town's snack streets and at the Erxianju food plaza.
