Hainan's 5A rainforest near Sanya: three jungle valleys, a 365-m glass cliff deck, 608-m zip line and a soak-guaranteed waterfall trek 35 km from the sea.
Thirty-five kilometres inland from Sanya's beaches, where the Wuzhishan mountains (五指山) fold toward the coast, lies the rainforest Hainan locals call their back garden. 'Yanoda' is the island dialect's breezy 'one, two, three' — long since adopted as a hello, delivered with a grin and a V-sign that every ranger flashes — and the park reads the three syllables as its creed: innovation, promise, practice. It opened on 2 February 2008, became a national 5A scenic area in 2012 — only Hainan's third at the time — and doubles as a National Cultural Industry Demonstration Base.
The green has scale: 45 square kilometres master-planned in the 'golden triangle' between Wuzhishan and Qixianling, its opened core woven from three valleys. Rainforest Valley (雨林谷) threads 3.5 km of elevated boardwalks past banyans, strangling figs and 'living fossil' black tree ferns; Dream Valley (梦幻谷) stair-steps three waterfalls down a 1.2-km gorge with a 200-metre cumulative drop; and wild Sandao Valley (三道谷) keeps a 3-km canyon of dragon pools and 380-m cliffs near-natural. Marketed as China's diamond-grade tropical rainforest at 18°N, it counts 1,400-plus tree species and 140 southern-medicinal herbs under air held near 24°C and loaded with roughly 20,000 negative oxygen ions per cubic centimetre — the fabled 'natural oxygen bar'.
And it plays as hard as it breathes. Since 2009 the signature has been the Ta Buxishui (踏瀑戏水) stream trek — straw sandals, a helmet and up to ten rope-and-water checkpoints climbing a waterfall, soaking guaranteed. A 365-metre glass skywalk hangs off a Wuzhishan foothill; a 608-metre zip line flies the canopy on four cables; July 2026 added the 123 Adventure Park's canyon rafting and via-ferrata canyoning. Between the adrenaline, Li brocade weavers, eight-tone ensembles and bamboo dancers supply the island's indigenous culture — while Binglanggu's heritage park and Qixianling's hot springs wait five and twenty-eight kilometres down the same road. This is the classic green day between Sanya's beach days.
Highlights
Stream Trekking Ta Buxishui (踏瀑戏水)
Straw sandals, a helmet and a coach for a two-hour wade-and-climb up the Dream Valley stream — up to ten checkpoints ending at a roped waterfall face. Soaking guaranteed.
Wa'ailu Glass Viewing Platform
A 365-metre glass skywalk — a 108-m cantilevered 360° deck plus cliff-hugging walkway — hanging some 200 m above the slope, with the coast and Wuzhizhou Island on clear days.
Rainforest Zip Line
608 metres on four parallel cables from the summit platform down into Rainforest Valley — roughly 200 seconds flying a 70-metre vertical drop over the canopy.
123 Adventure Park
Opened July 2026 on the park's natural canyon: a 1.3-km, eight-rapid rafting run and via-ferrata canyoning with waterfall jumps, a sky ladder and cliff rappels — gear, coaches and photos included.
Rainforest Valley Boardwalks
3.5 km of elevated walkways through giant banyans and the 'six great spectacles' of the rainforest — loop-sized for every stamina level, cool and shaded at a steady 24°C.
Li & Miao Culture
Brocade weaving demos, eight-tone Bayin folk music, bamboo-stilt dances and wind-chime blessing lanes — plus a 30-parrot theater and petting zoo for families.
