Asia's signature waterfall — a 77.8-metre curtain in a Guizhou karst gorge you can actually walk behind, at its thundering, rainbow-making best from June to October.
Huangguoshu is the waterfall China shows the world: 77.8 metres tall and 101 metres wide — the largest in Asia and one of the planet's great karst cascades — thundering off the Baishui River into the mist-crowned Rhinoceros Pool. It ranked in China's first batch of national key scenic areas in 1982 and its first 5A list in 2007, and European visitors once voted it among their ten favourite Chinese scenic areas. When sunlight strikes the spray, rainbows hang over the pool — the shot every visitor hopes to catch.
What makes Huangguoshu rare is that you don't merely look at it — you walk inside. A 134-metre passage, the Water Curtain Cave, threads along the cliff behind the falling water, its windows opening straight onto the sheeting cascade, close enough to touch. Television sealed its legend as the Monkey King's water-curtain lair in Journey to the West, and sister fall Doupotang, just upstream, appears in the classic 1986 series. Four centuries before the cameras, Ming-dynasty traveller Xu Xiake stood on these banks and counted it among the wonders he crossed China to see.
One ticket strings together three areas in the karst gorges of Anshun, Guizhou: the Great Waterfall, with stacked viewing terraces and a gorge-climbing escalator; Tianxing Bridge, a stone garden where pinnacles grow straight out of emerald water; and Doupotang, a serene 105-metre-wide curtain. A shuttle hops between them in minutes, and in season the falls turn theatrical after dark with a light-and-sound show — with the glittering Longgong caves waiting next door for a second day.
